Unique Forms of
Continuity in Space

National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art of Rome

Within the exhibition The Time of Futurism (December 3, 2024 – February 28, 2025) at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome, Magister Art presents a multisensory installation that celebrates the energy of Futurism, the movement that exalted speed, dynamism, and modernity. Unique Forms of Continuity in Space draws inspiration from Umberto Boccioni’s triptych States of Mind and the theories of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and Luigi Russolo, combining light, sound, and movement in a sensory experience that transcends time, blending the past and the future. The visitor becomes the protagonist of a constantly evolving landscape, where every step and movement modulates the surrounding environment, exploring the sensations of speed, change, and dynamism typical of Futurism.

The installation is designed as an immersive sensory journey, where interaction with the environment is made possible by depth cameras that detect the visitor’s movements. Lights and sounds change in real-time, creating a unique experience for each person who traverses the space. The path within the installation is divided into three main areas, inspired by Boccioni’s States of Mind triptych – The Goodbyes, Those Who Leave, and Those Who Stay, which come to life in a dynamic, continuous flow of lights, sounds, and colours.

To complement the visual experience, the work is enriched with four sound textures, created through concrete music techniques and granular synthesis, inspired by Luigi Russolo’s Intonarumori and Marinetti’s words. Each sound is designed to follow the visitor’s movement, creating a soundscape that evolves in real-time.

The lighting system creates spectacular visual effects. The light is programmed in real-time to generate colour transitions inspired by the hues of Boccioni’s works, creating a dynamic flow that follows the visitor’s movement. Each artwork is animated by fades and specific movements, generating a visual experience that constantly adapts to the movement of those passing through the tunnel.

The installation is enriched with video content that describes the creative process behind this multisensory experience, including a 3D reinterpretation of Boccioni’s sculpture “Unique Forms of Continuity in Space”, a work that innovatively tackles themes of movement and speed.

Unique Forms of Continuity in Space represents an immersive experience that innovatively explores Futurism. Thanks to the use of advanced technologies, light, sound, and movement blend together to create an engaging environment that not only celebrates the artistic movement but also makes the visitor an active part of it. Every step within the installation becomes a unique experience, where Futurism comes to life, and the audience becomes an integral part of the artwork itself.
