Rock Lessons – Special Event
Pink Floyd Reliving at Pompeii

Fifty years ago, British film director Adrian Maben produced a concert film with the Pink Floyd which made history: the band members David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Rick Wright performed without a public in the amphitheatre of Pompeii.

Fifty years from that extraordinary filmed concert, Magister Art has produced Reliving at Pompeii, an original docufilm directed by Luca Mazzieri, with the collaboration of Adrian Maben: five short episodes cover the finest and most intense moments of the film’s conceptualization and production. The closed-door concert of 1971 represented an important landmark for the Pink Floyd, their transition from an avant-garde band to a new artistic maturity, between an album like Meddle to a masterpiece of the ilk of The Dark Side of The Moon. However, it was also an important event for the site of Pompeii and its amphitheatre, where a powerful fusion between art, music, history, archaeology and future took place. All of which was captured in a film which achieved outstanding success in 1972 and was destined to become an authentic ‘cult movie’ in the years to follow, loved by generations of Pink Floyd fans.

The evening event of 10 April at the Auditorium Parco della Musica not only sets out to go over the various phases in the production of the film, but also to present, in a special episode of Lezioni di Rock (Rock Lessons), a show produced by the Fondazione Musica per Roma, the art of the Pink Floyd, which continues to be marvellously luminous and unique, contemporary and emotionally engaging. On the stage of the Sinopoli Hall, Ernesto Assante and Gino Castaldo will be joined by Gabriel Zuchtriegel, Director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii and Luca Mazzieri, director of the film.

The docufilm production, which was broadcast last October in live streaming from the Pompeii Amphitheatre on the cultural platform of the Ministry of Culture ITsART, would not have been possible without the support of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii and Gruppo TIM, the exclusive technological partner and promoter of the valorisation event held at Pompeii.
