The Scrovegni Chapel

A Contemporary Narrative
Villaggio Italia - World Tour

The multimedia video “Giotto. The Scrovegni Chapel. A contemporary narrative” made by Magister Art, thanks to the collaboration with the Culture Department of the Municipality of Padua, is part of the Italian excellences of the Villaggio Italia in Tokyo (26 - 30 August 2024): a multi-year Itinerant World Exhibition that accompanies some of the stops of the Nave Amerigo Vespucci, historical sailing and training ship of the Italian Navy, engaged in a world tour that wants to be not only an opportunity to strengthen international cooperation but also an opportunity to make known in the world the made in Italy and the beauty of Italy.

The story begins on February 6th 1300 when Enrico Scrovegni, a rich banker from Padua, purchased the area of the ancient Roman Arena to build a sumptuous palace, connected to a chapel that he endowed as a private oratory and as a sepulchral monument. It is a small single nave space (29.88m long, 8.41m wide, 12.65m high) built between 1302 and 1303. At thirty-six years old, Giotto was commissioned to illustrate the monument following a highly complex iconographic program: he set the stage to revolutionary innovations that will make the Scrovegni Chapel one of the greatest masterpieces of Italian and Western art.

The Scrovegni Chapel with its fresco cycles is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is also part of Padua Urbs Picta, a site composed of eight religious and secular building complexes.

Space, Perspective, Humanity, Emotional Yield, Patronage, Genius loci as spirit of place are the perceptions that the filmic experience of Magister Art renders through a journey inside the Chapel with a high impact of involvement. The declination of the contents follows a dramaturgical and musical narrative, in the best Italian film tradition, and the experimentation of visual, multimedia and graphic animation effects. Visitors are thus immersed in a unique and valuable experience, accompanied by a specially composed original soundtrack.
